THE PLANNING AND ZONING BOARD , The annual Christmas luncheon meeting of the Planning and Zoning Board was held at the Clearwater Country. Club on Friday, December 16, 1966, at 12:00 noon. Members present were Messrs.' Kruse, Reade, Butler, HarI"i.es, Iley, Mylander, Swan and Hilliams. Guests present were City ManageI", Mr. James R. Stewart; City Engineer, Mr. Max Battle; City Planner, Mr. Jack Wolle, Mr. Paul Rettig of the Engi- neering Department; and Mrs. Julie Hall of the City Planning Office. Following the luncheon, Chairman Kruse welcomed guests present. Mr. Kruse expressed the pleasure of the Hembers in having Mr. Harries with the Board again after a convalescence from an operation. Recog- nition was given to the honor paid !1ember Iley in his election to the presidency of the Clearwater-Largo Board of Realtors for '66-67. On . '. behalf of the Board, Mr. Harries was thanked and complimented on ar- r~ -'. rangements for the luncheon. The Chairman expressed gratification with Board accomplishments during the year, noting as some items of particular interest the passage of a sign ordinance, the inclusion of ' more specific standards for service stations and a Planned Unit Development amendment in the Zoning Ordinance, and the sponsorship of the Annual Florida Planning and Zoning Association Conference in Clearwater, which he termed one of the most successful ever held. Credit was given to the Planner and the office staff for the many hours of work devoted to Conference pre- parations. Hr. Kruse extended his thanks for the valued services of Members and the planning staff and for .the assistance of the Engineer- ing De~artment personnel and cooperation of City officials in connec- tion with Board activities. Reference was made to the recent reactivation of a Central Busi- ness District study project. Report was given in some detail of a Board discussion on December 8 with the Board of Governors of the Cham- .,..../ bel" of Commerce with regard to the in1 tia ticn of a CaD improvemen t pro- gram and the possibilities of arranging for a visit by a consultant, , ,'". It was learned' that as a.result decision was made by the Board of Gove~nors that, because of seasonal demands upon the merchants; it was not desired to schedule a consultant meeting at this time; however, that it was fur- ..'-.... ther decided that services of this type would be requested by them during the first quarter of 1967 and a program undertaken in support of caD improvement. Mr. Kruse indicated that improvement of the CBD would be an item of ~ajor attention by the Planning Board in 1967, also continuing its cooperative effort for City Beautification. The Manager.made short comment of appreciation for the Board's work and its contribution in providing guidance to the continued growth and desirable development of the City. He expressed satisfac- tion with the progress of the City in many fields and said that the existing tight money market would no doubt be a factor in Commission consideration of some new projects under study.
