05/23/1957Minutes _of- meeting.Thursday_May_U, 1?51 an P_l.annIn, Board Office rot ` Ari ve r - Present woro members Kruse, Made, Levison, St;ul.er,ANorton and Galloway., Captain Carey of the Traffic Department, Sid Lickton, City Engineer and Chuck Albury of the St. Petersburg Times. The chairman called the attention of the Board to failure of the legislature to roappoint Mr. Al flogero to the State Road Board. After discussion it was moved, seconded and passed Vhat the resolution preparad by the chairman, urging the reappointment of 1-Ir. Rogero be sent to the ' City Commission with copies direct to the legislators from this district. This motion was unanimously passed by the Board Captain Carey who is in charge of the Traffic Department of the Police Department discussed with the ]Board the Vine Street - Drew Street intersection and it was decided to defer action on this matter until. Captain Carey has an opportunity to study it and report to the Board i• with his recommendations. Mr. Norton reported that he had been unable to interview Assistant City Attorney Albritton regarding the acqui,siti.on of right-of-way for improving the Ft. Harrison - Pierce Street intersection:, Captain Carey was requested by the Board to study and give his recommendations on the extension of Pierce Street to Gulf-to-Bay Blvd,, Captain Carey suggested that the influence of the Planning Board might be helpful. in keeping the Aoimori.-a Causeway 3ridge closed on Sunday afternoons through hours of heavy traffic. He :tated that when- ever the bridge is opened, traffic backs up as far as the i•Iarina and that on Sunday afternoons when traffic in heavoy bot,ter than 30 minutes is required to clear the accumulation. He stated that one Sunday afternoon, recently, the bridge was :raised five times in one hour to allow passige of Boat6. This creates a condition that is impossible for the police to cope with,, After discussion, it was decided that members of thG I1 May 23 1957 Page 2 Board would handle the matter informally with members of the City Com- mission in an effort to get the approval of the United States Army Engineers in keeping the bridge closed. a•ir. Galloway volunterred to investigate the matter and repwt to the Joard at the next meeting., The matter of recommending that the City Commission and/or the Planning Hoard subscribe or become a member of the American Council To Improve Our Neighborhoods, was deferred until the next meeting, Due to next Thursday being Memorial Day the next meeting of the 1• Board will be dune 6,'1957.
