7 - Committee Members to be Heard
Member Jensen requested an update on last year's federal legislation that allowed, not
mandated, a tax-deferral for the first $3,000 of a public safety retiree's health care insurance
deductions. .
Human Resources Director Joe Roseto said the issue was under discussion. The
Pension Plan attorney needs to determine if implementation would require a Plan rewrite. The
City, should it participate, would limit the benefit to public safety retirees who are City health
insurance plan participants; few of approximately 185 public safety retirees participate. Finance
Director Margie Simmons said administrative costs would result and staff was considering ways
to simplify the process.
The resulting tax savings was estimated at $450 annually.
