The Mayor called the meeting to order and announced that the meeting had
been called for the purpose of considering the proposed purchase of the Bacon
property and the Conservatory of Music property, adjacent to the City Library.
Commissioner Kennedy reported that the real estate broker for the Bacon property
had in~ormed him that prompt action on the part of the City would be necessary
in order to complete the deal; therefore he had requested that a special meeting
be called. The City Attorney read both contracts. Commissioner Strang suggested
that since the properties are contiguous and are for the City's purposes one
tract unless both of these properties can be obtained, the City might want to
reconsider the purchase of either. Mr. lvm. Alley J agent for both properties,
informed the Commission the proposed contract would not be submitted to the
Conservatory of Music until the other contract on the Bacon property is signed.
The City Attorney read a letter from the Merchants Association of Clearwater
expressing approval of the Commission's action in selling land to Maas Brothers
for the location of a department store and also commending the Commission's
announced policy of using the funds so acquired to purchase other waterfront
property and to develop Coachman Park. The Clerk was instructed to acknowledge
receipt of the letter. Commissioner Strang moved that the City acquire the Bacon
property and the Conservatory of Music property for the use of expanding our
present library and other public usage inc1uding waterfront parks or whatever
public usage be deemed best and that these two contracts be approved and the
proper officials be authorized to sign them. Motion was seconded by Commissioner
Kennedy and carried wnanimously.
Upon inquiry from the Mayor regarding the Hartsell property, the City Manager
reported that a contract had been submitted to his office last Tuesday. The City
Attorney said that he had checked the contract and that the description needed
correction. Commissioner Strang suggested that a complete survey of the property
be made before authorization to sign the contract is given. During the discussion,
it was bro~ht out that a survey had been made by Mr. Leo Eutler three years ago.
The Mayor requested the City Engineer to get a copy of Mr. Butler's survey and
have it verified.
There being no further business to come before the Commission, the meeting was
adjourned at 12:03.
