We are two ex-service men who reoently bought this plEwe, !luving moved here from Jaoksonville in the desire 01' making Clearwater our IJermBnent residence. \'/e've worked thro ugn the swnmer months and have struggled to !l1blce ends meet. Tile !'aot that we are looated a oonside- rable distanoe from the center of town places us in a location where there 1s little pedestrian trartio and we heve to de~end mainly upon persons pas;,ing our plaoe in automobiles t persons com!lluting bet\1een Largo a ni Clearwater and persons in transit Jetween Clearwater and St. ~etersburg and other points south. Vie have watched the constant flow of traffio go by our plaoe and we have studied the situation seeldng the answer as to how we can best attraot the hundreds of cers that go by our place. How to let them know that a restaurant stands on this corner. Our building as it stands now is a square white structure, plain looking and unadorned. With the coming 01' the tourist seeson E.luto traffic will increase considerf:lbly. The tourists as well os residents of Clearwater will continually .pass our plao e Clnd I'm afraid will "pass up" our place unless we oan offer something attractive and appealing to the public eye. VIe believe to have 1'ound a way to do this. Tt Vlill not only make our building attrfJctive but it wiJll enhance the entire corner of So. ]j't. Harrison and Grand Central i~venues. I speak namely of deoorati ve lJwnings and a marquee. The construction of these awnings are very beautiful and very attractive. I believe I will offer pictures or the type we have in Dind and I'm sure they will speak for themselves. With an awning of this type suspended over our tVJO front windows and ''lith a marquee rising between them and extending to the curbing our place from a distance could not help but be noticeable which is exactly the effect necessary to draw the public. . They will also sive us shode rrom the glaring sun we now have in tjle a i'te,rnoons Bnd will be in perfect harmony throuth the color scheme with the green lawn surrounding our bUilding am the palm trees. However, since the 01 ty ado pted the Southern Standard Building Oode, the code prohibits the erection of su.oh a marques. B'urthermore, by following the oode the' overhang of the awningx would have to be placed about three (3) feet bBOVE our windows. The awnings would then give us no shade whatever from the sun and the effect we want to obtain could never be had by haVing the awnings so great a height above our windows. The length of our marguee will extend twelve feet t'rom the face 01' our building and the lowest point or projeotion between the sidewal~ and the marguee will be seven feet. The construotion of the building won't permit a marquee to be suspended any higher than this. The projection of the two awnings will be same as the marquee, however since our building sits back two feet from the sidewalk, the lowest point of projeotion will extend over the side~alk'ohly two inche s. I have looked about in the city and have found three establishments which do possess marquees of the type the pres~n~ code prohibits. The Fort Harrison Hotel, The Gray Moss Inn and the Melva Hestaurant all have marquees which extend to the curb and are supported by posts or pillars. These establishments are located well wi thin the main pert of our. downtown section, especially so of the Melva Restaurant. As r stated previously our location is such that we have little pedestrian trcdric whereas downtown there is a great amount. Such supporting posts (whiCh in our case WJ uld be two small ro Wld pipes) would not offer any obstruction to pedestrians at all bnd our sidewalk in sufficiently wide enough to handle any future increase of pedestrian traffic. These are the existing conditions as I have stated them to you. It is my sincere hope thut you gentlemen as commissioners of the City of Olearwater can find some way 01' grL nting us p ermis sian to have these awnings and margee erected. Yours very truly, (Signed~ Jam s Yeatmpoule James Meges "' ,___~'l.~.__ \~ , JI.~ "~"iJ.l"'h<(; 'I' ," f. "'.' Tt ti+ill not only mrake our building attractive but it Ai enhance t.e entire corner nf So, F, FIarrison and Grsnd Central trenues, I seak namely o decorative wnings end a marqtee. The construct`ion of these avnings are very beautii'ul and very attxactive, T Yeliave I will o':er pictures oz the type Ne have in raind and I'm 5ure thay will speak ior themselves. G'dith an awning oi this type suspended ovar our wo front windows and with a maxquee rising betyveer theTn znd exending -to the curbing our place from a distanee could not help but be noticeaBl.e which is exactl3T the ef'ect necessary to draw •the public, They will also give us shsde f'rom the glaring sun we now have in tp.e afteiioons and will be in perfect harriony throuth the color scheme with the green lwn surroundzng ou building ani the palm trees. Hovaever, since the city adopted the Southern Standard Building Code, the cod prUhibit the erection oi such a raarques. Furthernsore, by following the code the` overhang of the atvning v,nuld have io be placed about thre (3) feet =BSIE ur windo+ls. Trre avnings ,vould then give us no shade whtever i'rom the sun and the efiect we vlant ta obtain could never be had by having the awnings so great a heigh above our windovas. .'he length of our marguee will extend tvelve f'eet irom the ace of aur , building and the lowes-t pointi of projection betiween tihe sidewall and the marguee wi:il be seven feet. mhe eonstiruction o the buildin rvon't permit a marquee to bs suspended any higher han this. The projection of the two aVnings will be sFme as th e marquee, however ince o ur building sits back two feet from the sidewalk, the lowest poini, of projection will extend over the sidetivlk ohly wo inches. I have looked: ahout in the city and have fbund three establisbments which do possess marquees cf the type the present code prohibits, The Fort Harx•ison Hotel, The Gray bloss Znn and the blelva Restaurant all have marquees which ex-end to the curh and are suporved ?ay posts or pillers. These establishments are located we11 within the raain part af our downtown section, especiallp so of the IvZelva Restaurnt. .s I stated previously our locrti ion is such that we have littl,e gedestrian trdfiic vhereas downtcwn there is a great amount. Such supporting posts(vhich in our case w uld be two small ro und pipes) wo uld not ofer any obstruction to pedestrians at all Gnd our sidewalk in suf'Picienly wide enough to hdndle ay i'utare incsese of pedetrian traic. These are the existing conditions as I have stated them to you, It is my sincere hope that you gentlemen as commi.ssioners of th e City o Clear;ater csn 'ind some way of grnting us p ermission ta have these awnins and margeE erected. Yours very truly, (Signed.Qr James Yeatr, poula 'ames Iegas n OtDIN.lTC1, IdO. 1i. :;57 OI3'J"Ildi10E ,Lu.+',t1DI11G ():tDIi7t.TT•L I10. /..08, iii,GUL<:TIi1G tiVaT,.'+R ;HUIC IITHI7 TIu' CITY BY 1itqVl.IfSG k'UR R;GTJ- Lr.TIOiiS :IdD T:!;i IOFt ',.:a'Ii1G; StV.`s,C',' C4i7I`iL'C`T:7S ITD I,ti;Ti+,tt.'D :i-i+7tiVIC. :r'ZOIiTU,; i3r IT OIt77;IIJ,ull BX 1Hk; GI7."Y CT.,;;:TSIt7Ti OF TI3i, ^ITY.
