No. 79 - 34
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE
CITY OF CLEARWATER, FLORIDA, OPPOSING THE
ELIMINATION OF ALL AMTRAK SERVICE TO PINELLAS
COUNTY.
WHEREAS, it has been ascertained that the United States Department
of Transportation has recommended to Congress that Amtrak passenger
service to Pinellas County be totally eliminated; and
WHEREAS, implementation of such a recommendation would result
in a loss of jobs and income to the area; and
WHEREAS, Pinellas County annually has a very large tourist
population with over three and one-half million tourists visiting the area
each year; and
WHEREAS, the current energy situation which appears to be of long
duration demonstrates the critical need for alternate systems of travel to
function as a substitute for the automobile; and
WHEREAS, with automobile drivers being asked to consider limiting
the use of their automobile, the availability of mass transportation capable
of moving large numbers of people becomes even more critical; and
WHEREAS, curtailment of auto use and further curtailment of
available mass transportation will sharply impact on the economy of
Pinellas County; and
WHEREAS, more thought should be given to preserving and improving
existing mass transportation to insure continuance of a viable alternative
means of transportation;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF CLEARWATER, FLORIDA,
IN SESSION DULY AND REGULARLY ASSEMBLED, AS
FOLLOWS:
1. That the City Commission of the City of Clearwater hereby
