RESOLUTION
No, 69 - 22
'A~~)
WHEREAS, the City of Cleaxwater because of its location on
the Guif of Mexico may be directly in the path of oncoming storm or
hurricane; and
WHEREAS, because of the swiftness of the movement of some of
these tropical stoxms and hurricanes, the course may change appreciably
in a very short time; and
WHEREAS, it is the opinion of the City of Clearwatex that the
hurricane coverage provided by the U. S. Weather Bureau's Huxxicane
Center in Miami, Florida, was not consistent with the coverage provided
by that Center on the East coast of Florida, even though the potential
propexty damage and hazard is as great to the West coast as it is to the
East coast of the State of Florida; and
WHEREAS, it is the conclusion of the City Commission that the
weather reports that were given up to the time that the storm was imminent
were not in sufficient detail, often lacked cxiticai information and were
not updated frequently enough to give sufficient notice to public authorities
and private citizens in theix effort to protect life and property; and
WHEREAS, the City of Clearwater believes that it would be in the
public interest to have a weather center located on the Wcst coast of Florida
even if it were a tempoxary one created in times when a hurricane alert
e:ciste;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY
COMML55iON OF THE CITY OF CLF.ARWATER, FLORIDA,
iN SESSION DULY AND REGULARLY ASSEMI3LED, AS
FOLLOWS:
1. That the City of Clearwater hereby officially requests the U.S.
Weer#her Bureau to conduct a review of the weather information provided
during the last hurricane which occurred in October, 1868, to ascertain
whether err not sufficient adequate information was provided tv the public
and to governmental authorities and further to study the feasibility of
locating a hurricane center on the West coast of Florida on a permanent
or temporary basis.
2, That certified copies of this Resolution be furnished to Honorable
Maurice J. Sterns, Secretary, Department of Commerce, Washington, D. C. ,
Honorable Spessard Holland, Honorable Edward J. Gurney, Honorable William
C. Cramer, Hurricane Weather Center, Miami, Florida, and to Lawrence
