United Way of Tampa Bay ~ -- -', 2003 - 2004 Program Highlights · Provided county-wide child care for 677 children ages from birth to 5 years old. . Powell Child Care & Learning Center opened in April. This new child development center, in collaboration with Morton Plant Hospital, is licensed for 87 children including 32 infants. . Child Development Center at the Hispanic Outreach Center assisted several families with scholarships to provide quality child care. Staff organized a monetary collection for food and tuition to assist a single father of four children who, due to a medical emergency, was unable to work for several weeks. . A family at the Child Development Center in Safety Harbor recently had triplets, and staff wrote to the Safety Harbor Kiwanis who, in turn, donated three cribs and a monthly stipend of $100 for diapers to the family. The women's auxiliary also gave the family $500.00. . $30,000 from the State Attorney General's Office was awarded to the Family Village Housing Program to purchase food for resident families. · Family Village Housing awarded grant from Chapman Foundation to purchase new furniture for the Transitional Housing Program. . Allegany Foundation awarded $2,500 for client needs. Bus passes were purchased for residents of Family Village housing and Hispanic Outreach Center clients. · Wachovia Bank awarded Family Village $5,000 for financial literacy training for residents. · A Juvenile Welfare Board grant resulted in the addition of a glass wall in the upstairs lobby of the housing facility. Renovation was necessary to ensure the safety of children utilizing the area for tutoring and other projects. · Pinellas County Schools provided a tutoring and enrichment program at Family Village this summer for school-aged children. · Participation by ywca staff in state and county coalitions dealing with homelessness, hunger, poverty and housing issues have raised awareness of the dire need for additional Social Action Funding dollars. This awareness increased funding for both fiscal year 2004 and 2005. · ywca leadership participates on National ywca initiatives including Gender Specific Task Force, National Coordinating Board for ywca of usa, Peer Review, and Organizational Task Force. · Family Village Program Director participated as homelessness and hunger expert for Candidate Connection Forums for Children's Campaign held in Pinellas County. · ywca and Community Pride Child Care entered into an agreement for several ywca sites to provide child care for homeless families. · The Young Parents Program, a community outreach program, moved into its new facility in Midtown. · A new youth development group for teen parents, APPS Plus, was created to develop skills in leadership development and advocacy. · Five young parents attained their GED. . A total of 273 girls participated in the PETTALS and Y GirlS programs. 95% of the youth participated in at least two community service activities. 61 % of the youth program participants improved their self-concept while 96% increased their interpersonal skills. · For "Week Without Violence", PETTALS participants initiated "L.O.v.E. Campaign" (Live withOut Violence Everyday) · Youth program participants were featured at the Green Eggs & Ham Breakfast and the August Afternoon Tea with Hattitude. · Students from Melrose Elementary School painted a mural for PETTALSIY GirlS at new Midtown Youth & Family Enrichment Center. · Hispanic Outreach Center hosted visiting professors from Mexico for seven weeks for the Summer Cultural Experience. Approximately 40 young children between 7-12 years attended. · Legal Clinics held at the Hispanic Outreach Center on issues such as immigration, tenanUlandlord concerns, employment and family law, attracted approximately 100 Clearwater residents. Local attorneys provided consultations to the Center's clients at no cost. · Mutual of America Foundation nominated the Hispanic Outreach Center for the Community Partnership Award's Honorable Mention Award which recognizes and encourages partnerships between public, private and social organizations, for the ywca's association with the Clearwater Police Department · ywca Hispanic Outreach Center, in conjunction with City of Clearwater, was a finalist for the All American City award. . Healthy Families entered into an agreement with St. Petersburg General Hospital to expand their assessment services. Healthy Families now conducts assessments in all the major birthing hospitals in Pinellas County. . Healthy Families collaborates with Drug Free Families offering the Healthy Families model to more than 500 drug involved families annually. . The 80th non-denominational Easter Sunrise Service was held at Sylvan Abbey Memorial Park with proceeds from collection being donated to the ywca. . First Y-Teen Reunion was held with participants who were ywca members in the 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's. . Register at Work Week - voter registration drive held at North and South county sites. · ywca Board members Carlen Petersen and Debbie White were elected to local positions; Carlen to Clearwater City Council and Debbie appointed to the Safety Harbor City Commission. . ywca delegation attended the March for Women's Lives in Washington, D.C. . ywca continues to advocate for women by joining the Campaign to Rescue and Restore Victims of Human Trafficking. . Advocating for youth, the ywca joins Youth Development Alliance . ywca is major sponsor of USF's "Civil Rights Movement in Florida" conference. . St. Thomas Episcopal Church expanded its support to the ywca by hosting parties at Family Village and a Donor Appreciation Reception. . Y GirlS, a youth leadership program in collaboration with the Girls Scouts of the Suncoast, opened in Jasmine Court. . ywca moves into Midtown Youth & Family Enrichment Center in south Pinellas County. . Ambassador Program utilizes volunteers to contact ywca donors to personally thank them for their generosity. . Two Afternoon Teas successfully raised awareness and funds to benefit ywca programs; the August Tea directly benefited the Willette Givens McKinney Memorial Fund for families residing at Family Village. . Fourth annual Past Presidents' Luncheon was held. . More than 280 volunteers donated over 1,200 hours of their time working in ywca sites across the county. . Incorporated new National brand into marketing materials and special events. . ywca Foundation was created to ensure that future generations would have access to the ywca's life-changing services.
