10/29/2002 - Town Meeting CITY COMMISSION TOWN MEETING CITY OF CLEARWATER October 29, 2002 Present: Brian J. Aungst Mayor/Commissioner Whitney Gray Vice-Mayor/Commissioner Hoyt P. Sullivan Board Reporter The City Manager called the meeting to order at 6:05 p.m. at the Harborview Center. To provide continuity for research, items are in agenda order although not necessarily discussed in that order. ITEM #1 – Welcome by City Manager Bill Horne AND ITEM #2 – Introduction of City Commission AND ITEM #3 – Strategic Vision Presentation The City Manager welcomed the audience, introduced the City Commission, and presented the City Commission’s Strategic Vision. ITEM #4 – Questions/Input from Public & Answers from City Commission/City Manager It was indicated that some downtown buildings have historical importance. The County Commission was thanked for approving expansion of the CRA (Community Redevelopment Agency). It was stated the Vision Statement was based on community ideas. Residents were invited to view the Vision video on C-View, review the Vision Statement on the City’s website, and submit written comments. Public comments included compliments of the City Manager, City Commission, Vision Statement, Fire, Police, and Parks & Recreation departments. Concerns were expressed regarding public safety, the environment, and development approval processes. Offers of support and encouragement were expressed for downtown investment. It was felt that implementing the Vision Statement would be a challenge. It mtm10b02 1 10/29/02 was recommended the Quality of Life statement reference the Clearwater Arts Foundation’s cultural plan. It was recommended the City maintain a pedestrian scale on North Ft. Harrison Avenue and Cleveland Street. It was suggested that public safety be added as a standard of approval for redevelopment. Increased development flexibility was recommended. A definition of flexible building standards was requested.
